Hip-hip-hooray! Welcome Spring! I had a glorious sunny blue-sky day here in Nova Scotia with a refreshing temp of -2C (28F) and a windchill of -9C (16F) at noon.
The morning after the daylight-saving time change, I updated my car’s clock (snaps fingers) just like that. It helps that I’ve had the same car for almost 18 years. Win.
Last week, I entered the data and submitted my income tax return with only one day between start to finish. My usual kind of procrastination is not that I’m slow to start a task but that I’m slow to cross the finish line. Win.
I took advantage of clear roads on a few sunny weekend days in March to come out of hibernation and to visit and catch up with friends and family in the city. Win.
There’s still some snow on the ground in my area but, except for that crazy cold day in early February from the polar vortex, winter here has been mildish and light on snow until late February / March. I’ve been out snowshoeing a couple times but it felt like a rush to get out in the fresh snow while it lasted.
On a video call with a friend in Seattle last week, I experienced a twinge of Mountain Envy while he chatted about snowshoeing in the Cascades. Memories of adventuring on a deep deep snow pack while enjoying amazing views overtook me. Yes, I’m glad to be back in Nova Scotia. Yes, I’m where I need to be right now. And, yes, absolutely, I still really miss being in those mountains.
I’ve been out for some longer hikes farther afield with new folk on new trails. That’s brought up more happy memories of adventures in WA with The Mountaineers: signing up for a hike online, showing up at a carpool parking lot or trailhead, meeting new people, enjoying a long hike, eating lunch outside, and, at the end of the day, feeling like my feet have definitely been somewhere.
A big clean of the apartment has been on my to-do list for a while but keeps getting postponed. Now that astronomical spring is officially here, maybe some sunny days with open windows will be the inspiration I need. Per usual, there’s nothing green or flowering in Nova Scotia like for my friends in the PNW or Atlanta, but I have hope that good things are happening out of sight and underground. Happy Spring!
