In Nova Scotia, we’re at the end of the second week of necessary restrictions since the first COVID-19 cases were confirmed here 03/15. The provincial government declared a State of Emergency a week later on 03/22. I have many moments throughout the day when it doesn’t seem real.
I gave myself the first week to watch and read too much news and get little else done. This week, discipline with the daily schedule and limiting media consumption began. I was successful on Monday. It was sunny on Monday. But then Tuesday we had snow. I had to push myself out for a walk. I had to push myself to do anything. The rest of the week I was up and down. But each evening I went to bed acknowledging I’d try again tomorrow.
Last week in the nearby province of PEI, it was announced government-owned liquor stores would be closed as non-essential services. People lined up close together and panic-bought. The decision was quickly amended. I’ve been sober five years but, in my own self-interest, now is NOT the time for the people of Nova Scotia to involuntarily abstain en masse. Just sayin’.
Here’s a win-win. For produce, I placed an order online with the local farmers market. When I picked up my order, it was a carefully regulated process with social distancing. I got bread, tofu, apples, hot sauce, and LOTS of veggies (beets, leeks, parsnips, potatoes, and sweet potatoes). The local veggie farmers and other vendors will have a rough time of it so, along with filling the fridge with things that keep me healthy, I voted for them.
On Tuesday, our only local newspaper group laid off 40% of their staff (due to the drop in ad revenue due to local businesses closing). The provincial paper has made all their online COVID-19 coverage accessible but I signed up for a subscription. It’s another vote for local, something I can DO to help while sheltering-in-place.
Communicating with family and friends is a big part of my day. There are more ways to help. I’ll try again tomorrow.
Shelter-In-Place Reminder: Believe in science and facts. Follow instructions from medical professionals. Communicate daily with family and friends.
